Introduction

Since the beginning of the semester in Writing 10, my writing, reading comprehension,
and research skills have improved. I was unaware that most papers are arguing
for or against something and that most papers are arguments until I took this
course. My arguments were sometimes vague and hard to understand but over the
course of the semester they improved. The process in writing, organizing what
you’re going to do when writing and after writing also helped improved my
writing skills. At the start of the semester, my writing was vague and I had a
lot of unnecessary words in my sentences. However, at the end of the semester
my writing was specific and I used less unnecessary words in my sentences.
Group work also improved my writing skills, by using what I learned in the
course to peer edit my classmates’ papers I was able to understand what they
did wrong and to avoid the mistakes in my paper. My reading comprehension skill
has also improved. At the beginning of the semester I lacked the ability to
comprehend or analyze text. The course required the students to read and
annotate short excerpts provided by the professor, and also required the students
to read two novels. Annotating the short excerpts helped improve my reading
comprehension skills as I had to find specific parts of the excerpt, such as
the thesis, the claim, the argument, the reason and evidence. Discussion of the
two novels in class also helped my reading comprehension skills through
analyzing and understanding the text, and understanding why the author wrote
the way they did. My research skills dramatically improved from the beginning
of the semester as I understood the difference between the sources I should
use. I was never taught what sources were credible, reliable or the source a
student should use in a research paper at the beginning of the semester.
However, at the end of the semester I knew which sources were credible and
reliable, and I knew that scholarly sources should be best used in a research
paper. Writing 10 has improved my writing, reading comprehension and research
skills through collaborations of group essays and mini-conferences with my
professor. The process of writing such as planning, drafting and revising has
also helped improve my writing, reading comprehension and research skills.
Rhetoric in my paper such as providing readers with an argument and claim, then
reasons, evidence and sometimes an acknowledgement of the opposition to my
claim has helped improved my writing skills. The research ethics in the course
improved my research ethics through the knowledge of citing sources properly, and
the quality of the source a writer should have in their paper. The crafts of
writing also improved my writing skills through the knowledge of active and
passive voice, and being as simple and specific when writing your paper.
